Long Light
Photographed over four days in the valley below Borgo Sereno, in the last hour before the frost.
There is an hour here, in the middle of November, when the sun comes in flat across the fields and everything it touches turns the colour of raw yarn. The village keeps working through it. The looms do not stop for weather.
This collection began in that hour. Not with a sketch, but with a length of undyed cashmere held up against a stone wall to see what the light would do to it.

Chapter one
Undyed, first
Every colour in the season is judged against the natural fibre before it is approved.
The last seam
Sleeves are closed by hand. It is slower, and it is the only way the shoulder falls correctly.
We were never trying to make something new. We were trying to make something you would still want in twenty years.

Chapter two
Where the wool waits
Fibre rests in the store room for a full season before it is spun.

A four-ply crew neck takes eleven days to leave the building. Nine of those are spent waiting — for the yarn to settle, for the knit to relax, for the finisher to have an unhurried morning.
We have counted this many times, hoping to find days we could remove. We never have.
Chapter three
The table at noon
Work stops at half past twelve and everyone eats together at one long table in the courtyard. It is not a policy and it is not a photograph we staged. It is simply how the day is arranged, and it has been arranged that way since the first workshop opened above the square.
